Associative Thought – Thoughts that move mechanically by one reacting to another with the most obvious or frequently used connection
Automatic – Unconscious, mechanical manifestations running by reaction to external influences

Dharana – Sanskrit yogic term for ability to hold attention on one thing exclusive of all else
Dhyana – Sanskrit yogic term for ability to hold attention on one thing exclusive of all else for long period of time. Also known as meditation.
Emotional Field of Activity – Human manifestations of emotions, feelings, moods, temperament, disposition
Evaluation – Honest assessment of how well an Intention was met
False Personality – An unconscious and mechanical cluster of emotions, movements, and thoughts that calls itself “I”
Field of Activity – A person’s physical, emotional, or intellectual manifestations
Goal – Short term or long term plan for consciousness work
Harmonious Development of Man – Gurdjieff’s principle that consciousness cannot rise to a higher plane unless the emotional, intellectual, and physical parts of a human are developed in a balanced way
Hatha Yoga – Physical movements done slowly and with concentration to increase limberness
Higher Emotional Realm – A higher state of consciousness distinguished by new and extraordinary emotional perceptions and experiences, including the ability to sustain a positive emotion for any desired length of time
Higher Intellectual Realm – Stage after higher emotional realm. Marked by greatly increased energy and focus of mental abilities, intuition, and conscience.
Identification – Losing the observing I in a field of activity
Inner Monologue – Unending internal associative thoughts that run mechanically
Intellectual Field of Activity – Human manifestations of thought, reasoning, logic, formation of ideas and words
Intention – Goal for consciousness work for a defined period of time
Jnana Yoga – Branch of yoga that intellectually examines the different properties of each level of consciousness
Law of Accident – Unwilled reactions that happen haphazardly without conscious direction or control
Life Review – Mentally reviewing the events of one’s life and noting times of awareness
Meditation – Ability to hold attention on one thing exclusive of all else for long period of time
Mindfulness – A popularized term vaguely denoting a somewhat more alert state or way of being more present in the moment
Mood – Word used to pretend one is not responsible for one’s own emotions
Negative Emotion – Unconscious, identified emotion that drains the human system of energy and causes bad chemicals to flow through the blood stream
Observing I – Willed attention on one’s manifestations and fields of activity to achieve permanent freedom from the mechanical Law of Accident
Octave – Completion of a goal from start to finish. Has two main points of resistance and slow down, at the beginning and near the end.

Playing Back the Tape – Reviewing mentally one’s experiences and awareness during a segment of time

Self Observation – Being aware of the activity of one’s body, mind, emotions, and environment, but not being lost in those things
Self Remembering – Observing oneself all of the time without exception
Stretching – Setting a goal that causes you to work beyond your normal capacity
Switching – Moving attention from one field of activity to another to get free of mechanical manifestations
Tangent – Accidental direction of actions or conversation caused by automatic associations
Transcendence – Being aware of a manifestation without being lost in it or identified with it
Unity – Having only one I, the I who wants to be conscious
Vehicle – A project, job, or task conducive to goal setting for consciousness work
Yoga – Physical, emotional, or intellectual discipline engaged in for increased health or spiritual awareness. First described by Patanjali in his Sutras in the 5th century B.C., and widely used by followers of Hinduism and Buddhism.
